Reduce Tooth Decay

What are Fissure Sealants?

Dental Fissure sealants are a protective layer applied on the chewing teeth (molars) to reduce tooth decay in the grooves and pits of the tooth

Fissure sealants are a white or clear composite resin, similar to white tooth filling.

The sealant forms a hard shield that keeps food and bacteria from getting into the teeth

Prevent Deep Decay

How do they benefit the health of the tooth?

Generally it is due to genetics how the tooth forms and in the molar teeth fissures can tend to be deep

By sealing the tooth when they first erupt, it can prevent common deep decay in the future

It allows for patients to easily clean the biting surface of the tooth.

What happens in the procedure?

Our dentist or oral health therapist uses tools to clean out the groove painlessly. The tooth is then washed and dried.

The coating of the flowable filling material is then placed in the deep areas to reduce bacteria and plaque to form there

How long do they last?

Depending on how well the patient cleans their teeth, the fissure sealant can sometimes wear away

Every 6 months, they should be checked and if they have fallen out or a small part has come away, the practitioner will add a little or replace the fissure sealant completely
