Preventive Care & Hygiene

We are often told, prevention is better than a cure and this rings true particularly in dentistry. Regular dental check-up and cleans are essential alongside daily brushing, flossing and a balanced diet. These are all factors that assist in lowering the risks of bigger dental complications down the track. When you come in to see us for your comprehensive exam, we can detect any signs of potential trouble early on and prevent them from worsening.

To understand the importance of good oral hygiene, we need to understand tooth decay and gum disease.

Tooth Decay and Gum Desease

Tooth decay is caused by plaque, a soft sticky film of bacteria that can build on our teeth. Our aim when brushing and flossing our teeth is to remove this build up however, even the most thorough of brushing will still leave behind plaque in hard to reach areas. This plaque hardens into a yellow build up called tartar (calculus) that our normal toothbrush is unable to remove. This is when your regular visits to the dentist/hygienist are of paramount importance. A dental clinic will have the tools and techniques necessary to clean and remove that pesky tartar.

The problem with leaving the tartar for extensive periods would be that the bacteria thrive on the food/drinks and sugar that we consume on a daily. This build-up of bacteria can lead to cavities and if left untreated for too long, gum disease. Severe dental issues such as periodontitis (advanced gum disease) begins as gingivitis characterised by swollen, bleeding gums. Gingivitis can be treated by improving oral hygiene and visiting the dentist. Gum disease in its advanced stages can lead to loss of bone surrounding the teeth causing them to become loose. Gum disease also increases the risks to varying health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, digestive disorders and stroke.

To fix complicated dental issues are often costly, hence the importance of early prevention to reduce pain and expenses.

Preventative care is fundamentally important to patients of every age range and should begin as early as the age of 1. It is our responsibility to educate our patients and their families the correct techniques and processes to ensure continual good dental hygiene practices. It is never too late nor too early to start taking care of your teeth and keep your health in check.

Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to visit us even if you feel it has been a while since your last check-up with a dentist. Our team will never judge you and are here to help.
